Opening up this blog to other contributors
As mentioned in my last post, one of the reasons the network may not be as vibrant as it could be is the number of posts to this blog.It's time to to try opening up this blog to other contributors.
However, many believe that group blogs don't work, and I must admit I have my misgivings.
I'm concerned that this blog could lose its focus as a primary source of information about the CLC project, and that people will start using it as a substitute for their own personal blog, which would defeat the purpose of this project, in my opinion.
And this project is also about modelling a class blog, where the teacher posts 'official' information, allowing students to leave comments on the class blog, but encouraging them to post their own thoughts and content to their own online spaces.
One strategy for dealing with these concerns would be to come up with a set of contributor's guidelines to unsure that the blog stays on focus.
So what do you think? Should we open the blog up to other contributors? Do we need a set of guidelines?
On the assumption that people will be okay with multiple contributors and a set of guidleines I've made a start on a list on the wiki - CLC Blog Contributor Guidelines.
Please add your thoughts about what should be included in the guidelines on the wiki page's discussion page.

Yes! Open this up please to all in the group.
Guidelines need not be completed, and, if anything, the use will evolve over time. It is true that tools are often used in particular and unexpected ways by their users so as to fulfill particular user needs.
So it may be counter productive to specify too much as to this blog's use.

Yes, I am all for opening up the blog to other contributors, however I think there is a place for a discussion about the purpose and focus of the blog.
And you are right, the guidelines don't need to be sorted in advance - they will evolve. And there wouldn't be any 'specifying' going on - this is a community process. :-)
However I just wanted people to start thinking about the issue, and contribute to evolving what are, in a sense, group norms.
Any group or community, whether online or offline, has group guidelines, rules or community norms. Sometimes they are explicit - like an organisation's charter or a website's code of conduct - and discussed up front and in the open, and sometimes they are implicit, only emerging as members of the group speak out against the problematic behaviours of other members.
Unlike tools with centralised control such as learner managements systems, Web 2.0 tools are introducing us to a new era, where instead of an authority figure - a teacher, a moderator or adminstrator - unilaterally deciding what the community guidelines, rules or norms are in advance, the whole community is responsible for developing the guidelines, as well as policing them.
The guidelines don't have to be anything 'heavy'. I initiated this process because I think as educators begin to find themselves responsible for operating in these types of open spaces they need to start thinking about these issues.
As far as the specific contents of our guidelines go, my biggest concern in opening up the blog to others is that people will take the easy route and post to the group blog rather than set up their own blogs or online presences, ending up in them just talking about PLEs and distributed learning networks rather than doing it.
